James McDaniel

Born in Washington D.C. in 1958, James McDaniel has acted on stage, screen and television. Before getting his start in acting, McDaniel studied veterinary medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. However, McDaniel is best known for his performance as Lt. Arthur Fancy on the television series “NYPD Blue”. He was nominated for several Emmy and SAG awards, winning a SAG Award in 1995. In addition, he was the only cast member to direct an episode of the show. After seven seasons, McDaniel left the show, and continued to work in tv and film, playing the role of Nat “King” Cole in “Livin’ for Love: The Natalie Cole Story”.

McDaniel plays the role of Sergeant Jesse “Long Haul” Longford.  If you ask Longford how long he’s been a cop, let’s just say you’ll get a colorful response.  Longford is a D-Town docent – born and bred, he knows every inch of the city. Mapquest asks him for directions!

Longford is set to retire. Then he’s headed to Tuscany, which explains why he’s always speaking Italian. He has reservations about leaving his squad, taking what he calls, “The Knowledge”.  Longford and his partner, Detective Aman Mahajan, are like an old married couple, finishing each other’s sentences while bickering endlessly.

Mr. McDaniel, you are a wonderful actor and you should not leave the “Big Screen”. I, like many of your fans waited eagerly and with anticipation to see you back in a role you played so superbly. Although I like your the new show, Detroit 187, you left an indelible mark when you left NYPD Blue. I wish you well in your next endeavors and am looking forward to seeing you return back to the show, Detroit 187 after a brief retirement (the fans hope)from it. Take care.
