Detroit Worries about Its Image

posted on July 27, 2010 by bwandersee

It hasn’t even aired yet, but some Detroit City Council members are already worried about the affect “Detroit 187″ will have on the city’s image.

The members are afraid the show will portray the city as dangerous and crime-ridden, and they have asked the show’s producers to attend an upcoming council meeting to discuss it.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Councilman Kwame Kenyatta said, “What they are using as a hook is Detroit as a murder capitol, where we manufacture murder as part of an assembly line.”

Detroit earned the nickname “Murder City” after more than 700 homicides were committed there in 1974, and the city’s homicide and violent crime rates are routinely among the nation’s highest among large cities.

Under Mayor Dave Bing, the city has pushed hard to bring down its rate of violent crimes, and last year the rate dipped slightly.

Bing’s administration wants to take a business approach with the city’s growing film industry, mayoral spokeswoman Karen Dumas said. The show’s producers met with the city’s film office, and the original trailer was scrapped because portions could have been viewed by some as negative toward the city, Dumas said. But the city doesn’t plan to intrude on how the show is written or filmed.

The only ones th@ can further harm our city’s image is the residents. There are many city themed television shows th@ do not affect said city images. “Detroit 187″ is a drama and should be viewed as one. Reality police shows th@ film live (real) incidents are more harmful than any drama. Those are real situations and can only be fueled by real actions. Viewers recognize fiction from reality and know how to separate them. I applaud this production and their choice to film the show in Detroit.

The Detroit City Council should worry less about the show and concentrate more on how to make the city a better place to live. All these years in office and the city council has not accomplished one good thing. Detroit 187 should have an episode on how corrupt the city council is.

The city council is blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Why would you want to stop something that’s bringing jobs to the community and boosting our economy? I mean the whole cast and crew are staying in our restaurants and renting our hotel rooms. Not to mention that one of the directors on the movie is one of DetroitS own. The point is that city council members need to stop worrying about the fictitious problems of the city and more about the real ones. This TV series is not actually putting anybodies life in jeopardy. On the other hand if can’t afford enough cops to patrol the streets that is!! Just the other day a guy was beating to death with a crow bar in front of the whole neighborhood, where was city council members then? Worry about real problems in detroit city council members!!! Just get in tuned stupid’s!

Detroit is dangerous and crime ridden. Council–get over the image crap and do something about the city. It’s dangerous, dirty, corrupt, full of gang activity and graffiti and racist. “187″ Detroit police code for murder-something the police hear seven or eight hundred times a year

I think it is a positive image for Detroit, I mean painting and trimming the police head quarters because it would look like too much of a dump on TV. The set is 100x nicer than 1300 Beaubien it represents and part of DMC was rebuilt to improve on Detroits image. If nothing else it is bringing over 30m to the local economy.

I always wondered why Detroit wasn’t used for a crime show. Too often TV shows are set in either NYC or LA. Cable networks are using other cities as their backdrop, but a lot of times they just show local exterior shots to set up a location shot. How cool it is that they are filming there.
I hope that along with using the city as a backdrop to their stories, they show Detroit bad and good sides. The different ethnics living there, Coney Islands, Greektown, the river, and include the various suburbs also. Detroit used to be a great city, let’s hope it can come back!

It is too bad this type of TV series is being allowing to air about Detroit. It does nothing positive to help our City or State. We need positive things to happen not negative things. Of course, this show will reinforce what everyone in the world thinks of our City and not help us to grow.

Seriously it IS a huge issue, but not really at the same time. NBC is selling the fact Detroit IS dangerous, IS violent, has never been below Top 10 cities for murder and violent crimes since i’ve been alive. The problem with that, Is it is indulging on a bad statistic for profit. I AGREE it should not be of concern, but i see how it is an issue. Even funnier is the highest population of the country to tune into that show will be Detroiters. Because Being from Detroit, you are familiar with shows and movies “talking about” detroit, but they are never filmed in detroit. 8-mile Being the newest, and before that i think parts of the blues brothers were filmed in detroit… before that.. um were talking black and white films. Micheal Moorer filmes part of his documentary in detroit but those aren’t feature films.

i think this “drama show” will maybe bring some job opening as extras. detroit is detroit i was borning and raised there and will continue to go there no matter what—city council needs to focus on the import issues not tv

sorry about the misspelled words—born and important.

I am really looking forward to the show. I love Detroit; always have. I love to tell people this white guy was born there (in a neighborhood that’s long since become a prairie after the early ’70s)and lived there during the riots. I still visit at least twice a year (from Baltimore, which has its own problems…), and Detroit still has the edgy feeling that any big city has. But just like anywhere else, you have to know where to go and where to avoid. Like I joke to my friends still there: “At least it ain’t Flint!”

Baltimore is another rust belt , crime ridden town that’s turned their violent image into an asset (of a sort) by actively seeking film makers to produce crime dramas there. If nothing else, The Wire and Homocide Life on the Streets are remembered as two of the best dramas ever on television, and the revenue the productions brought to the city didn’t hurt either.I had wondered when Detroit would get in on some of this , and now it seems they have.

I can’t wait till the show airs. I’m just a small town girl born and raised in South Detroit. I am proud of who and what the city made me! A little white girl not afraid of anything!!! I moved to California in the early 80′s but go “home” at least once a year. How exciting, and revenue to boot. The City Counsel needs to move on. Everyone from coast to coast knows how tough Detroit is, this show isn’t going to bring an image not already deeply seeded into the mind of most people.

This makes me laugh so much… I worked in the city of Detroit for years been mugged by homeless men beggers on the street while walking into my old job. I hate to be the one to break it to city counsel but the city has been a wreck for decaids just waiting on the final race war to set the whole city on fire and watch it burn to the ground so we can rebuild a new city!! By the way I’ve moved to a new state and when I tell people I’m from Detroit they as me questions all the time about the crime and filth of the city.., so the words out; Detroit IS a shit hole

Having lived all over the country (including almost 3 years in Orange County, CA, south of L.A.), I have known for years that TV shows or movies supposedly set in a particular locale do not always accurately reflect the actual conditions there. Hey. It is drama and entertainment. So relax.

I have personally tried to work with both the Mayor and city council President on a plan to rejuvenate Detroit and provide employment, and they have shown almost zero interest, so the leadership in Detroit has no credibility with me. They all need to chill out and do their jobs, and not worry about the negative implications of this show, which will at least bring money and work into the area.

If the show does reflect that we have problems (and we do, so get real), then so be it. Just ignoring our problems, or papering them over, will not make them go away. Finally facing them and making an actual effort to fix them just might.

If all production companies stop coming here to do movies and television, and instead go to Vancouver, then that is when we have to be concerned. At least the fact that they are here, right down on the streets, and working with their crews, attests to some level of trust that the city is not a completely unlivable environment.

If the city council was so worried about Detroit’s image they should have done something to improve the city years ago. Detroit used to be a great place to live and grow up. Detroit 187 can’t be any worse for the city’s image than the damage Kwame has already done.

This show does no harm to the city. This show actually makes the city seem more organized and the citizens more civilized than they actually are. There are nice parts of Detroit (amazing history), but the truly bad parts are MUCH WORSE than the show portrays. I am a Detroit native, and have worked downtown at Detroit Receiving Hospital and other DMC hospitals for the last 7 years. I have seen enough gun violence and nonsense to last a lifetime. EVERY SINGLE night I saw some sort of Gun related violence come into Detroit Receiving…seriously! Don’t mention the criminal family members who occassionally threaten those trying to help. We should thank ABC for bringing business here. There is no sense in residents and the immoral city council to try and hide the truth. Here is a suggestion, do a reality TV show of Detroit city council/government (watch YouTube Monica Conyers, Detroit city council, Kwami Kilpatrick’s mom , and others for the real Detroit).
