Showrunners Dumping the ‘Mockumentary’ Style

posted on August 9, 2010 by bwandersee

ABC’s “Detroit 187″ producers say they have decided to get rid of the pilot’s mock-documentary style.
Executive Producer Jason Richman referred to a real-life Detroit shooting that promoted the city to ban documentary film crews from following around police units, so it’s more factual, he suggested, to not have the show shot documentary style.
But his partner hinted that a better reason is that the mockumentary style just didn’t work creatively.
“While the documentary conceit was interesting for pilot,” said executive producer David Zabel, “we were going to feel hemmed in and hampered by that … there’s things you give up but there’s a lot more that you gain.”
Even with the tweaks, some critics say “Detroit” is ABC’s best shot at a breakout title this fall.

Being a Colorist I appreciate images with a wider range of tones and attitudes. And mockumentary styles do handcuff the looks. Its far easier to achieve a variety of looks and feel from origination that can be shaped into drama with more range than HD camera raw footage, So I look forward to the style 187 comes out with.

Glad the writers and producers are able to stay nimble and flexible, to keep this in the D. Perhaps a different style will bring more sophistication to a grungy medium, like the characters will, I’m sure. Mocumentary loses that element at times.

Not to mention the fact that a little girl died and police have been accused of playing it up for the cameras. Maybe Hollywood and police work don’t make such a good combination when people’s lives are at stake.

Glad they are giving it up, cause they didn’t know how to do it.
I think it could have been a very effective tool, but it takes a real talent to pull it off and ABC is obviously not going all out for this show. Truely a half-a$$ed attempt on their part.
