The Numbers Are In…Now What Do They Mean?
posted on October 4, 2010 by bwandersee
Well, love it or hate it, plenty of people tuned in for the second episode of “Detroit 1-8-7″. According to our good friends at Neilsen, more than 8.7 million viewers were watching Tuesday night.
So what does that mean? Well, it’s pretty good compared to NBC’s “Parenthood”, which pulled in only 4.8 million viewers. But it wasn’t quite enough to compete with CBS and “The Good Wife” which is a returning show, and grabbed 12.8 million viewers. Although if I had to guess, the people out there watching Detroit 1-8-7 are NOT “The Good Wife’s” target audience.
The bottom line is, if you like this show, put your remote where your mouth is, and it will be back. And we’ll be here monitoring the numbers each week.

Michael Imperioli is terrific in this role, the entire cast is great. Most of all, the writing is excellent. This is a cop show with grit that has grabbed my attention. Crossing my fingers that more folks discover this show. Please give it a chance, ABC!

That’s great news to hear. I noticed that they barely dropped in the ratings from week 1 to week 2, so I was hoping it would give them some credibility. It’s my favorite new show and the only thing so far this season that has really piqued my interest.

Two thumbs up for Detroit 187. It’s well scripted and maybe the most intriguing
tv cop show since Hillstreet Blues. Stories balance crime plot with bits of humor and human interest in an urban setting that’s a welcome change from than NY or LA. Way better written than new Hawaii 5-0.

The only way to save this show would be to get rid of the main character. He is trying too hard.

Detroit 187 is unique and compelling. It has the added power of actually being filmed in Detroit. For once, Detroit is not in disguise as New York or some other big, urban area. The city itself becomes a character – raw, gritty, slightly despondent, but determined to overcome the tragedies it has experienced and revive itself. Combined with the strong cast and crisp, clean writing, Detroit 187 has the potential, if given the chance, to become one of the best police dramas on television.

Love the show since the first episode. Some people that I work with [legal] don’t like it because there are different story lines running at the same time. I told them you have to watch it from beginning to end. Keep the episodes coming!

Love this show! The writing is great–tense themes, human interest, and great acting. This is one of my favorite shows–I have only two, or three and so far this one is number one!

Thank you everyone involved in Detroit 187. Michael Imperioli shines as Det. Fitch in this new gritty cop show based in Detroit. A great supporting cast completes an intelligent storyline and fine documentary formula filming. Episode one was by far the best of new fall preview shows, and each episode gets better each week. This is a winning show that will only get better with age. Thanks again!

Let’s see the Gravier homicide on the east side. Great to see our city on TV, How about useing Belle Isle homicide/suicides too.

Have watched all three episodes and agree that this one of 2010′s best new shows.Love the fact that it doesn’t take place in the usual L.A.,New York City,Chicago locales.

I was hooked from the beginning and with each episode Detroit 1-8-7 just gets better! Love the acting, love the story lines and love seeing Detroit front and center. Detroit 1-8-7 is an outstanding police drama.
David Theisen on October 6, 2010
Wow-what a great new show. Tense, full of suspense and keeps evolving and thickening in interest with each episode.
Acting is outstanding and the uncertainty and unpredictability of the next actions unfolding leaves me perspiring, mentally involved and hungry for more .
Well done-Bravo!

I’ve watched it from the start, and I truly am enjoying the show. I find it humorous and emotionally honest as well as dramatic. As a native Detroiter, however, there are certain gaffes in the scripts that throw me off. If you’re shooting here, make sure you sound like it, too. And learn the geography of the state. It’s not just local color; you’re representing a largely unknown/unexposed part of the country. We’re just as quirky and colorful as anywhere else. And it’s not soda, it’s pop. Soda is soda water. And ‘eastern Michigan’ is a university.

Really like the show. I am male , cau, 77 yrs, of age, curious of the definition Detroit 1-8-7

I’ve watched all three episodes and each one is better than the last. I Love the scenes actually filmed in Detroit ! The story line has hooked my hard and I find myself emotionally attached to each episode ! The developing storyline of Detective Fitch is awesome and I can’t wait to find it all out ! My friends were worried that he would have a New York accent, but the storyline fits him perfect and his Midwestern accent is great ! I Love this show ! And I’m willing to over look the little gaffs, but would love to see a little more research and get the terminology correct, small price for such a great show ! KEEP IT COMING !!!
Perry S. Wyatt Jr. on October 6, 2010
187 is a police code for Homicide
Jeff on October 6, 2010
I would be able to watch the whole episode if the camera didn’t move so much. We watch TV on a big screen so the movement is exaggerated even more than intended. We can watch 7-8 minutes before my whole family get nauseated from the camera movement. Why don’t you trade in that 1st year film student behind the camera for a veteran camera guy so we can enjoy the story? Or buy some tripods.

my son is a sound/ film senior at the university of michigan. im sure he would love to be part of this crew…great show…keep it up

Each week i am happier about the direction of the show. Hope it is not a one season wonder. I Would like the writer’s to do more research regarding locality of show. Episode three…They’d take the death penalty off the table??? Michigan does not have the death penalty
carole harding on October 7, 2010
Love, love this show. The ONLY new one I watch!!! Keep it coming. Great acting, great stories.
Jay F on October 7, 2010
I’ve watched since the first ep, but it wasn’t until the third ep, “Nobody’s Home/Unknown Soldier,” that I realized how good this show really is. And a big part of the goodness comes from making Detroit a character.
By comparison, L&O’s new Los Angeles flavor might just as well be set in New Jersey, for all the LA singularity it sports. That opening scene on the beach in Venice might as well have been shot on the Jersey shore set they used for the ep with Elliot’s mother.
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW, ABC. IT’S TOO DAMNED GOOD.
BubbaMich on October 8, 2010
Love the show, but you purists need to lighten up! They are trying to reach a national audience and that audience doesn’t care if you call it soda. Besides as an area native I myself have called it soda ever since serving in the military. Someone told me PoP sounded old!
Mike on October 13, 2010
I moved out of Detroit in 1980 and since 1984 I live in Florida. Since Detroit is over 80% black I am surprised to see this many White Police Officers on this show.
We all know that Detroit must almost have a black Police Officers Dept nowadays but watching this TV show you would never know it. I hope this show lasts and wont be cancelled. I must agree that the hand held camera work is distracting and not professional. I hope in the future Hamtramck will make a debut into this Detroit 187 program.
Best of luck Detroit 187 – its great seeing a cop show thats not located in NYC. Its great listening to normal American speech…..even with an ex Sopranos star… Det Fitch…hey Christapha..Tony is lookin for ya…
Mike

I’ll be honest. This show is contrived and it sucks.
Nick on October 14, 2010
I love this show and is well wrote. I wanted to know who sings the song My girl” in Spanish. I know the Temptations sing the original. I think it was in 4th episode.

LOVE IT! Both me an husband work and I get a call every week to make sure I don’t forget to record! Please come back! Have seen too many good series canceled and replaced with less than entertaining garbage!
Janine on October 25, 2010
I DVR’d all the episodes and finally got to watch all of them over the weekend. I LOVE this show. It’s great seeing Detroit scenes and skyline. The show is interesting, witty and dramatic, keeps my attention. I’ve lived in and around Detroit all my life and spent most of my working life in Detroit, it’s great hearing all the locations and the scenes. And to Mike who left in 1984 – there are still plenty of white cops in Detroit. My dad and sister were both cops in Detroit and both working at 1300 Beaubien. I hope this show makes it.

Really like the show….but due to its pc (i.e. unrealistic )slant it is destined for the scrap heap. Start looking for another gig, Michael…love your work!

Love the show. Left Detroit in ’68, but my heart is still there. What does “187″ stand for? grew up in Detroit from ’34 to ’68. Born in the shadow of the Fisher Bldg. Great City–Needs help in getting re-born. Maybe this show will start that process.
Linda LeClair on October 31, 2010
Loved the show from the start! The tag team of the characters is wonderful! If I will stay up past 10:00 p.m. it must be good! What a shame if this show does not last.

ABC, please give this show a chance and move it to another time slot. This is an excellent drama. Or if you do cancel it maybe TNT will pick it up like they did for Southland.
